This is a phenomenon experienced by most drivers when they drive for a long period on highways continuously without a break.
When we start from our home,we start slow and pickup speed as we hit the highway. Our brain estimates our speed by the changing landscape on the sides. After driving long distances, our body gets accustomed to the high speeds making the high speeds feel slow.
We start feeling comfortable with the speed leading to us gradually increasing the speeds without realizing it.
Velocitization/Speed Blindness is the phenomenon of getting accustomed to high speeds after long hours of driving.
What are the risks ?
1.when we pass through villages, pedestrian areas on highways, we get used to speed and we continue to drive at speed, which is dangerous.
2. After the highway, when we hit the city roads,we continue to drive at the same speed and this could be one reason for more accidents on the outskirts of cities.
The risk of velocitization is higher, when we drive for long straight highways and enter city limits.
How to handle it?
Keep looking at the speedometer often.
Car stopping distance increases with speed,so be aware of it.
Keep looking at sign boards and reduce speed when we exit the highway and enter the city.
Reduce speed while passing through villages/towns on highways.
Noise levels in modern cars are minimal,so without our knowledge we hit speeds. This is happening without our knowledge, but it is very dangerous for people outside.
