What are blind spots in a vehicle?
A blind spot in a vehicle is an area around the vehicle that cannot be directly seen by the driver while driving. Blind spots exist for all vehicles and even for pedestrians. Hence,on roads,it's essential to use all our senses.
What causes blind spots ?
The vehicle structure, position of the driver and his direction of vision causes blind spots. For example,in a car,A,B,C,D pillars,head restraint of seats can also be blind spots.
What are the most common blindspots in a car?
As shown in the image,the area represented by red is a blindspot and its very essential to know, especially while driving on multi lane highways,while turning etc.
Are there any other blindspots in addition to these? Yes,they are.
A Pillar Blindspot
A pillar blindspot is another one which is created by the A pillar.
This can cover a biker or pedestrian. For example,both the bikers are hidden behind A pillar and a potential accident scene. How to manage: while turning to left or Right,tilt your head slightly and observe.
Front blindspot:
The area under the bonnet in front is a blindspot and it can hide let's,kids completely. Before starting the car and moving front,ensure nobody is there in front. Some cars have front parking sensors,but make it a habit to manually check.
Rear blindspot:
Now most cars have rear parking cameras but make it a habit to check rear before reversing. A horn might alert kids. Educate your kids not to be behind cars.
How to check blindspots?
Whenever we are turning,lane changing,pulling over from parking, reversing,turn your head in the direction of movement and perform a shoulder check. It's a must.
MSM ROUTINE: Make it a habit to follow MSM routine while making any lane change. Pulling out from parking is also a lane change.
When to check blindspots?
ALWAYS.
It becomes critical while doing the following:
1. Lane change
2. Reversing
3. Parking
4. Pulling out from parking
5. Turning etc.
